Distal radius fracture is a common trauma in the elderly because of the high frequency of osteoporosis in this age group. Hand and forearm fractures account for a significant portion of emergency department visits, with fractures of the distal radius comprising the largest portion (44 percent). These injuries typically occur in youth involved in sports or seniors with osteoporotic bones following a low-energy fall.
